Chapter 1
Nat’s POV
“I can’t believe your leaving!” Todd turned to me with sadness in his eyes. Todd was my best friend. He has been since forever. I had met Todd when I was in the 3rd grade when I had changed schools because my family had moved to a bigger house with more land. My dad owns a thoroughbred racing farm and his business was booming. The move from one side of Louisville, Kentucky to the other was hard on me. When we moved into our bigger house, Todd’s family had come by to ask to board Todd’s horse at our stable. Since then, me and Todd have been inseparable. Not only did we hang out at school but at home we were together all the time just to hang out and to ride our horses. There was never a moment we were not together.
“I know!” I sadly said back to him. My plane to New York would be leaving soon. “I think this is the first time that we are going to be separated. And its for months or even years!”
“It might be.” he said taking both my hands, “But you are going to go knock Demi dead with your skills. You have a great career ahead of you and I am so proud of you.”
I was going to New York to audition to be a backup dancer for Demi Lovato.
“Out of my mom’s will though.” I added in.
“Forget about your mom. Think about what you want.” Todd replied giving my hands a squeeze.
My mom had never wanted me to get involved with the music business. She thought that the media and work load was too harsh and I wouldn’t be able to take care of myself. But I didn’t care what she thought because I am here now going to achieve my dreams that I have wanted since I was three years old and starting dance classes.
“And I want to be a backup dancer.” I answered back.
“Exactly.” he said while letting go of my hands and picking up my purse that was sitting next to me and handing it to me. “Now get on that plane and show New York what your made of.”
I never realized that the board with my flight number now flashed now boarding. My stomach plummeted with sadness and fluttered with nervousness and jumped with excitement. It was NOT a very comfortable feeling.
“I will. Thanks Todd. I would never be here without you.”
I know how cheesy and cliché that sounds but it was more than true. He’s been the one that has held me through the rough mother troubles and led me through to where I was going now. If it weren’t for him, I would have given up on these dreams a long time ago.
“Now go before the plane leaves without you and carries away your dreams.” he said exaggeratedly thrashing his arms around like my “dreams” were “flying away”.
“Bye Todd.” I said giving him a hug and a small peck on the cheek.
“Bye Nat. And don’t forget to always call and give me updates, you can always reach me.”
“You know I will. And don’t forget to come visit me.”
“I’ll go have it scheduled.”
Turning on my heel, I walked away from Todd and my past and through the tunnel to enter the plane and into my future.
The surroundings of New York City flashed by me as I sat in the backseat of the taxi. I was finally here! Right after the plane landed I had grabbed my luggage and hopped in a taxi and was now heading straight to Steps On Broadway Dance Studio where the auditions were going to be held. Nervous butterflies swarmed through my stomach as I could see the studio slowly come into view.
What if I don’t make it? I would have done all that hard work for nothing and I’ll not only be disappointing me but I’ll disappoint Todd too…
The taxi pulled up to the front of the dance studio and stopped.
“We have arrived,” the gruff taxi driver turned to tell me, “That’ll be $35.00.”
I reached inside my purse and pulled out my Louis Vitton wallet (Kevin would be so proud!), about the only designer thing I owned. Pulling out my Visa credit card, I handed it to him and he swiped it.
“Thank you very much, sir.” I said while getting out of the taxi.
He waved and drove away.
This is it.
I walked into the front doors into a crowded studio. Girls were piled everywhere and it was hard to move around. Swerving through the crowd, I made my way to the front desk.
“Hey girl! Welcome! You here for the audition?” the girl behind the desk said to me. She looked about in her teens or early 20’s with long, striking red hair and brown eyes.
“Yes ma’am” I answered her back.
“Just sign these papers and grab a number and go wait in the line right over there.” she said while pointing over to the enormous line of girls.
I don’t stand a chance against this many girls! She’s only choosing one…
Shaking my head to clear my thoughts I turned my head away from the line and back to the front desk and took the pen she was handing me and signed all the papers needed and took my number.
“Good luck!” she cheerfully said to me as I walked off to the line while pinning my number to my spaghetti strap top.
“Number 206 please.” the girl at the door said to me.
Trembling, I walked past her and into the dance room where two brunette girls were sitting at a table in the front of the room.
“It’s very nice you could be here.” the brunette on the left said to me. I recognized the one on the right as Demi.
I wonder who she is.
“I’m Rachel.” she greeted me while sticking out her hand for me to shake.
Well that answers that.
Walking up to the table, I shook her hand and introduced myself. “Nat.” After shaking Rachel’s hand, I reached my hand out in front of Demi for her to shake.
Instead of shaking my hand, Demi stood up from her chair and gave me a hug. A little taken aback, I gently hugged her too.
“I’m Demi. I’m so glad you came to try out.” Demi smiled at me and sat back in her chair.
“By the way, she loves hugging.” Rachel pointed out.
“You warn me now.” I playfully snapped at her while giggling.
“So, what are you dancing for us today?” Demi asked me.
“I am going to be doing a jazz dance to ‘It’s Raining Men’.” I answered her while handing the tech girl my CD.
“I love that song.” Rachel pointed out “Classic.”
Giggling once again at Rachel, I walked to the center of the room and hit my beginning pose. More butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I tried to keep calm. Then the music filled my ears as I counted along getting ready to start to dance.
5…6…7…8…
As soon as I started dancing, the nerves flew away and I just got into the music. Every so often when I looked at the judge table, I could see Demi smiling at me and Rachel dancing and lip-syncing along with the music. Too soon, the music ended and I had danced without any mistakes!
“You did fantastic!” Demi said to me “Once everyone is finished we will come announce who made it. Thank you very much.”
“Thank you.” I said while grabbing my CD from the tech girl and walking out of the room breathing heavily.
I did it!
Suddenly the studio was silent as I saw Demi and Rachel walk out of the dance room and stand in front of the front desk.
“To start off, all of you girls had fantastic auditions.” Demi said to the crowd. “After some hard thought, we’d like to announce that my new backup dancer will be…”
“Number 206, Nat!” Rachel screeched interrupting Demi and jumping up and down.
Demi turned to glare at Rachel then turned to face the front again and rolled her eyes.
As soon as my name was called, I stiffened up with shock. All the girls’ heads snapped to face me with disappointed eyes. I didn’t know what to think but I did know that I couldn’t believe it.
“Come on up here Nat.” Demi called to me.
Slowly, I made my way through the crowd and was now face to face with Demi.
“Congratulations Nat.” Demi said to me.
“Thank you so much.” I responded still not believing what was going on.
“Follow me.” I heard Rachel’s voice float by me then felt her hand on mine as she started skipping and pulling me back towards the dance room.
I looked behind me to see if Demi was following and I caught her rolling her eyes at Rachel once again while walking behind me.
“She’s obnoxious.” Demi told me.
Once we got in the dance room, Rachel finally let go and turned to face me.
“So,” she began “since you are our new backup dancer we wanted to congratulate you by throwing you a party.”
“What!?! Really!?!” I gasped.
“Of course.” Demi answered me.
“It’ll be at the Hilton Ballroom tonight at seven. Be there or be square. Like a box. Not a big box. A little one…” (all credit goes to Joe!)
“Ok,” Demi interrupted Rachel “She gets it.” Then turned back to face me. “And if you want to get ready with us you can.”
“I’d love to get ready with you guys.” I answered back. “Actually, I’m staying at the Hilton so if you want to get ready up in my room. I still need to check in though.”
“Let’s get ready there!” Rachel turned to Demi with pleading eyes and folding her hands together.
“Sounds perfect.” Demi said while reaching into her pocket and pulling out her phone. “But we need to exchange numbers.”
Rachel squealed with excitement as she pulled out her phone.
Switching through each other’s phones, we punched in our numbers and parted our ways.
“I’ll call you guys when you can come.” I turned to tell them.
“See you then!” Demi called after me.
Taking yet another taxi, I made my way over to the Hilton Hotel. Once the taxi drove up to the doors, the doormen came and opened and helped me out while handing me my luggage they got from the trunk.
I could get used to this.
Pulling my luggage behind me, I walked through the front doors, which were held open for me, and to the front desk.
“May I help you?” the man behind the desk asked.
“Yes sir.” I answered “ I need to check in.”
“Name?”
“Nat Thomas.”
“Give me a moment.” the man said while turning and starting to type on the computer next to him.
Suddenly, I felt something hard collide with my head and a force pushed me down to the ground.
