Summer in a Blender
Chapter 1
If you asked Leah what she thought of life, her answer would be simple and straight to the point; life was boring. Sure she had friends, but she wasn’t into the whole best friend thing. Her time was either spent looking up random things on the Internet, listening to music locked up in her room, or walking around her small neighborhood in Nebraska.
On this particular day, it was just the first week of summer. Leah’s plans included: sleeping, eating, maybe reading a book or two, going on the computer, and laying around doing nothing. That was all she had done for the past summers ever since she was ten, and she had just turned sixteen a month ago.
She knew her parents wished she were more like her younger sisters Cadence and Nadine who were always running around with friends, but she wasn’t into that stuff. Leah’s favorite thing in the world was to spend time by herself. Whenever her parents asked her why she didn’t get out of the house more often her response was always the same, “Everyone needs their alone time, but I just happen to need it more than others.” That response always left her parents sighing, but they let the matter be because they knew there was no changing their daughter’s mind.
“Leah, honey, do you mind helping me get the cloths out of the dryer and hang them up?” Leah’s mom yelled up the stairs to her daughter.
Leah had nothing better to do so she got off her purple comforter and headed downstairs. To help make the job less boring she brought her MP3 player with her to listen to. As she was walking down the dark brown, wooden steps the Jonas Brothers blasted through her headphones.
Leah loved most of the Jonas Brother’s songs. She also loved the fact that they wrote their own songs and how they weren’t some band that would do anything to get your attention. They were just there and were grateful for it, unlike most of the other bands she listened to. She loved all three brothers, but one stood out in her mind, and that was Kevin. She didn’t know much about him, but from what she did know he seemed like brother who would understand her most. Not the mention that he wasn’t quite as bad looking as many people claimed to say.
Eventually Leah made her way down to the laundry room and retrieved all the cloths from inside the dryer. She put them into a basket and began folding them or hanging them up. There were only two more articles of clothing left by the time her mother walked by and leaned against the doorframe.
“You have any plans for today?” She asked watching her daughter.
“Nope.” Leah replied, making her answers short and sweet like normal.
Sighing her mom said, “Well, I was listening to the radio and I heard about a contest. The three winners each win a date with the one of the Jonas Brothers. Not only that, but they get to spend a week hanging out with them in California. I hope you don’t mind, but I entered for you. I know that you like the band so I figured you wouldn’t mind if I did.”
Leah stopped folding the green shirt she was holding and looked up. “Um… Thanks?” she said unsure of whether or not she was glad her mom did that. However, she quickly thought that the chances of her winning were unlikely so she added, “Yeah, thanks mom, who knows, maybe I might even win.”
“Good, I’m glad that I did it then. They should be announcing the winners tomorrow at two in the afternoon, I will be sure to remind you when it is on.”
“Alright.” Leah said as she rushed to fold the shirt she realized was still in her hands.
Leah’s mom walked away and shortly after that Leah ran back upstairs to her room. Once she was back on her bouncy bed she couldn’t help but think about the contest. She thought of how boring her life was so something as interesting as winning a contest was bound not to happen.
The song she was listening to began to bore her so she changed it. That’s Just the Way We Roll came on and Leah just sat there listening to the lyrics, “I woke up on my roof with my brothers, there's a whale in the pool with my mother, and my dad paints the house different colors…”
Laughing she thought, “Talk about the complete opposite of my life.”
