“So, do you think people will be into this?” asked Marni, squeezing the teddy bear while Becky rooted through her closet.
“Jonas Brothers fans will be,” she answered from the depths of her closet. More shuffling, thumping, and muffled mumbling was heard before… “Ah hah!” Becky suddenly cried, causing Marni to jump about 4 feet in the air.
“Found it!” she singsong-ed as she tumbled out from the mess of clothes and other old junk, oblivious to her friend’s near heart-attack.
“Found what?” scowled Marni, peering at the mass of brown yarn in Becky’s hand.
“The finishing touch, of course,” was her only response. She snatched up the bear and with a flick of the needle she had stolen from her mom’s sewing kit, the bear had…
“An afro?” questioned Marni, looking skeptically at the bear. The yarn was a curly mop on between the bear’s ears.
“Nooooo…a Nick-fro, Marni!”
“Oh!” she squinted at the bear and held it at a different angle. “I guess I kinda see the resemblance.”
Becky sighed in frustration and took the bear back.
“Well it’s not perfect yet, dummy. That’s the whole idea. We send this to other Jonas fans, who eventually make this teddy bear look like Nick Jonas.”
“And then what?” Marni asked, raising her eyebrows.
“And then…I don’t know yet. But what I do know is when it’s done, it’s gonna be the coolest teddy in the world. It’s gonna be awesome, you know?”
Marni just shrugged. “You and your Jonas Brothers…I’ll never get it”
One Week Later
Becky handed the package over to the UPS man, smiling at the box she had so carefully covered in her favorite pictures of Nick. The bear, along with a journal for each contributor to place their picture, name, and everything else, was on its way to a fan in Arizona that Becky had met in a fan chat room. And after that, who knew where it’d end up?
Four Months Later
“I have a package here for a…Nicholas Jonas?”
“Uh, yea, that’s my brother. Thanks,” Joe took the box from the delivery guy, looking down curiously at the box he now held in his hands. It was absolutely covered in pictures of his younger brother. He nodded bye at the mailman and shut the door.
“Here, man,” he said, after locating Nick. He handed him the package. “More fan mail for Nick J. ‘OMG, he’s so hott!’”
Nick rolled his eyes at his brother’s fangirl imitation before turning back to the package. It wasn’t the usual box, though. The outside look like it took a lot of time, and yet it was mysteriously battered. The postage sticker addressed to him was overlapping a bunch of others, and he then realized that meant the box had been used many times. How strange.
Finally, he opened the seam carefully and pulled out a highly decorated teddy bear. It only took him another second to realize that it was supposed to look like him. It was amazingly intricate. A teeny silver band was somehow even sewn into the bear’s paw, at an attempt to look like his purity ring.
He shook his head, completely in awe, wondering who could have gone through all this trouble. He peeked in the box once more and pulled out a journal-type notebook, filled with writing.
“What the…” he whispered, opening it to the first page.
Hi!
My name’s Rebecca. But please call me Becky. And this is my traveling teddy bear. Based on the beloved Nicholas Jerry Jonas. Just add a bit of what Nick means to you to the teddy bear and pass it along to whoever you want. There’s just a few rules.
1. Add anything you want to the Nick bear. Just nothing gross and please take your time. Make it from the heart, girls.
2. When you’re done, make an entry in the journal. Just a picture, your name, and what you added and why.
3. Send it along! Use the same box, please, and make sure the person you send it to is a fan (duh) and will pass it along too.
4. When you can’t think of anything else to add, send it back to me.
Thanks so much, guys! Can’t wait to see the finished product!
**Becky**
Nick finished the letter and then went on to see Becky’s picture and read the explanation that she had done the hair, because she had “always wanted to run her fingers through his perfect curls.”
After scanning all the entries, along side the ring and his hair, he discovered that tiny versions of his guitar, the JB CD, black Ray-Ban sunglasses, a tie, skinny jeans, green converse and a diabetes dog tag had been added, all with great care and skill.
He couldn’t believe the effort that had been put into the teddy bear. Then he wondered who had sent it to him. A girl named Stephani was the last entry. Hmm….she must have found his house and address. But why would she send him the bear? What could he possibly add to it?
He sat thinking for awhile. Suddenly, he had the perfect idea. Taking another long look at Becky’s picture, he smiled, grabbed the notebook and began to write.
Two Weeks Later
“AHHHHHH!! Marni! It’s back!!” Becky raced through her yard, over to her best friend, who was playing basketball in her driveway.
Even Marni couldn’t help but be excited. “Welll…open it!” she cried when Becky just stood staring at it.
“Sor-ry, I was reading the return address. This baby came all the way from Cali.”
“Jeez! From PA to California? That’s pretty darn cool, Beck.”
“I know. Well, let’s go inside and open it, so it doesn’t get all dirty.”
They entered Becky’s house, and got comfortable on the floor of her room.
“Well…here goes,” Becky tore open the box, pulling out the filled journal lying on top. Marni grabbed the bear from underneath and gaped at it.
“Becky…” she trailed off, speechless.
“Just wait, Marni! I want to read these before I see it!” she cried, not looking up from the notebook.
“Ok, if you say so,” she said, replacing the teeny rose she had pulled from the teddy bear’s grasp.
Becky read through all the entries slowly, and after reading each one, she looked at the corresponding part on the bear. Finally, she reached the last one. She gasped aloud as she read the name and saw the picture.
“No way,” she whispered. “Marni, listen.” She began to read the entry out loud.
“Hey,
I’m Nick Jonas. I’m gonna guess you know that already, though. When I received this bear, I was amazed at the idea and the outcome. Who would go through all this trouble to make something like this dedicated to me. And then I saw your picture, and read your entry, and I knew exactly what this mini-me needed. In his hand paw, there’s a rose. Don’t worry; you’ll soon understand why it belongs there.
Love, Nick”
In a daze, Becky removed the little plastic rose from the mini paw. Before she could even give it any more thought, though, her doorbell rang. She got up to answer it, sending Marni a questioning look.
But Marni just shrugged, and waved her forward. So she walked quickly over, tugging it open. The journal, still in her hand, dropped to the ground.
“N-Nick?” she whispered. And it was, in fact, him, standing right there on her suburban Pennsylvania porch.
“Hey Becky,” he responded, holding out a teddy bear and a rose. “I just thought if you got to have a Nick bear, then I should get a Becky bear. It’s only fair you know.” He smiled shyly. But she stood, speechless, and he continued, “Unfortunately, though, I don’t know what to put on it. Do you think you can help me?”
Her jaw dropped, and Nick stepped forward and politely pushed her chin up, closing her mouth. Snapping out of it, she shyly took the gifts from him.
She flashed the rock star a shaky grin. “I think I can help.”
