She’s From Boston
(Kenny Chesney)
She comes from Boston
Works at the jewelry store
Down in the harbor
Where the ferries come to shore
She never really knew how good it would feel
To finally find herself in a place so warm and real
Niki was a simple Wheelock girl. Attending classes here and there during the week, and working at a jewelry store to save up money. It was a change from the bakery, but she knew that if she boxed another blueberry pie again, eventually a customer would be unhappy with the vomit plastered across their chest over the counter. She lived her life everyday, waking up to see the sun shine, but there was something missing. She would walk into work, dressed in her best to sell to whoever walked through that door. But she often found herself daydreaming. Looking out watching as the ferries came in, but across the harbor she knew there was something more out there. Her hazel eyes sparkled with the reflection of the water, dancing across her mind while she kept wishing she was somewhere else.
“I… have to go” she stuttered out, grabbing her purse from behind the counter, and jetting through the door before her manager could get a word out.
She ran home, booking a flight, threw some things into a bag and hailed a cab to the airport. Arriving just on time, she fumbled through her purse, handing the driver a few ones, thanking him, and running into the open doors. Tapping her foot from nervousness, she passed through security and finally made it to her gate. She plopped down on the plastic chair, turning off her cellphone that continued to notify her of messages from work. She pulled the bill of her hat down over her eyes, pushing out the rest of the world.
“Now boarding rows 1through 10” the woman with the monotone voice spoke over the speaker.
Glancing at her ticket clutched tightly in her hand, she stood up, carry-on in tow, and walked towards the attendant waiting to rip her ticket. After exchanging pleasant hellos, she walked into the tunnel that lead her to the plane. Finding her seat quickly she threw her bag up overhead and moved in towards the window. As she waited for the plane to take off, she pulled out her favorite picture. Running her finger along the crinkled edges, she frowned knowing that she would miss her dog Sophie with all her heart, the one thing she regretted leaving behind. The plane took off on time, and she was greeted by an old couple flying to celebrate their anniversary. She wasn’t looking for conversation, and after falling asleep twenty minutes later, neither were they.
The plan softly landed in Niki’s new destination and she stood from her seat. As she walked off the plane she placed her bag on the floor and stretched her arms. She had never seen a more beautiful place. The palm trees were dancing in the light breeze that carried the sweet scent of the salty ocean. The sound of waves rolling onto shore sang in her ears, and the warmth from the sun took over her body.
She wears a Red Sox cap
To hide her baby dreads
The girl she was in New England
Is different now and dead
In all the local bars
She flirts and tells the boys while they're talkin'
She's from Boston
Taking the first cab she could find, she checked into a local resort. They smile and nodded when she asked for a room for one, they had runaways looking to escape their either hectic or boring lives checking in daily. Niki took the elevator to her room located on the 19th floor and slipped the roomkey in until the greenlight flickered. Slowly opening it she took a deep breath and walked over to the balcony. On her way she set down her bag and let go of her suitcase.
“What lays beyond the harbor” she smiled to herself as she watched people jump in the waves, surf on boards, and lay out under umbrellas.
Unpacking her things, she felt exhausted and voted on taking a nap for herself so she could venture out later. When her watch alarm lightly beeped, she rolled over and glanced down at her wrist. 7:05. She slowly sat up rubbing the sleep from her eyes and jumped into the shower. When she stepped out, she threw on a light touch of makeup before getting dressed into her favorite jeans, a fitted tee, and throwing her hair up in her red sox cap.
She left her room, key in her back pocket, pressed the elevator button and waited patiently for it to come down. When the doors opened, she was greeted by a dark haired, brown eyed boy hiding behind a pair of white rimmed shades. He smiled, and catching his contagious happiness, she smiled back and took a tentative step inside. Walking over to the corner she stood alone, toes wiggling in her flip flops, hands together fidgeting with her fingers. The boy stood in the other corner, watching her from the side of his glasses. Finally finding the courage to say hello, he was interupted when the doors opened on the lobby floor.
Niki stepped out of the elevator quickly, making her way out of the hotel and towards the bar located on its property. She wasn’t in the mood for dancing, or playing games, she just wanted a drink or two to wash down the fear of her sudden decision coming back to bite her. Creeping into the bar, she walked towards the bartender and sat in an empty stool. A blonde haired, blue eyed, tan and muscular boy came in her direction.
“This seat taken?” he asked with a smirk.
“Nope” she said her eyes wandering around the bar.
Sitting down, he called the bartender over. “Shot of Tequila for me, and can this pretty girl get A Kiss on the Lips?”
“Sure thing” he said nodding and turning to create his fancy concoctions as Niki giggled.
“So what’s your name?” he asked, his eyes twinkling.
“Niki” she said batting her eyes.
The bartender brought the drinks over , and she felt no hesitation to indulge herself in the sweet smell of her tropical drink, and the peach shnapps tingling down her throat.
“So, where you from?” he questioned, starting the top of a long night of conversation.
When she finally stopped herself from refills, she thanked the boy for a lovely evening and made her way back to the hotel to crash.
She comes from Boston
Talks to her family now and then
Through e-mails and postcards
She tries to explain to them
That education and occupation will have to wait for now
She loves the Rasta, reggae rhythms, her dreams have changed somehow
The next morning, she woke up early to get a head start on the day. Washing out the smell of ciggaretes and alochol from the bar the night before, she made her first move a much needed shower. Afterwards she threw on her orange and yellow polka dot swimsuit and she grabbed a towel from the closet. Before she walked out the door she made sure not to forget her favorite baseball cap. Throwing it on, she strutted to the elevator and as she watched the doors slowly slide open, she was greeted by the same boy hiding behind the white rimmed shades.
Niki smiled, said hello, and moved into the same corner, this time picking threads from her towel to keep her occupied.
“Boston?” he asked, breaking the awkward silence that lingered around them.
His question caught her off guard and she looked at him puzzled. Duh she thought to herself, he’s asking a question Niki, answer him. Feeling stupid she finally let words slip from her mouth.
“Duh” she said as her cheeks flushed. “I mean, yes. I was just.. thinking duh to myself in my head.. and.. nevermind” and her face grew bright red.
The doors slid open on the main floor and she scrambled out before he could respond. Shuffling her feet towards the beach, she walked until she found the perfect spot. Laying out her blanket, and pulling out a book from the tote she had brought down with her, she sat down to make herself comfortable. Before she opened to the page she last folded down indicating where she left off, she decided to pull out her phone and turn it back on. Laughing at the number of missed calls, she was startled when it started ringing a familiar tune. Her sister was calling and Niki wasn’t sure if she should answer, but her heart told her to.
“Hey Tori” she mumbled after she pressed the answer button.
“NIKI! WHERE ARE YOU?” she screamed into the phone.
“Tor, chill for a second.” She tried to calm her sister down, but Niki knew it was a lost cause.
“Niki, you need to come home. Everyone is worried.”
Niki could hear the tears forming and her sister’s breathes becoming short and quick.
“Tori, don’t freak. I just… I don’t know. I needed to get away. I’m fine, I’m safe, and I need to find msyelf. School can wait, and so can work. My happiness is more important to me than those things, and you need to understand that.” She pleaded into the phone, hoping that their close relationship would show that her sister understood.
“Niki, when are you coming home. Just please come home” her sister cried.
Niki’s heart was breaking with each tear she knew her sister was sheading. She thought about it, maybe she should go home tomorrow. Afterall, she did enjoy the night before, and today would be even better. But before she could tell Tori her plans, she felt a warm hand on her shoulder. Looking up above her where somebody had blocked her sun, she felt her throat constrict and the words run away when she saw the boy from the elevator.
Gaining her composure, she smiled and simply told her sister,
“Listen Tor, I’m going to be here awhile, I don’t know when I’m coming home. I’ll er, send a postcard or something. Love you” and hung up before Tori could say goodbye.
Turning off her phone, the boy sat next to her on his own towel.
