CHAPTER ONE
“I woke up, on my roof, with my brothers.”
-Jonas Brothers [That’s Just The Way We Roll]
ONE YEAR LATER…
Starts in my toes, makes me crinkle my nose, wherever it goes, I always know. You make me smile, please stay for a while now…
I groaned and slammed the snooze button on my alarm clock. It was 9:30 on a hot, St. Louis summer morning and the sun shined brightly through the blue Pottery Barn curtains draped over my window. I didn’t have to work until 3, so I had absolutely no intention of getting up.
I had just begun to doze off again when my phone began vibrating on the wooden bedside table. I was going to let it go to my voicemail, but instead it kept vibrating. I rolled over and flipped it open, sighing as I read the name on the caller ID.
“I hate you,” I mumbled.
“You just hit the snooze button, didn’t you?” Ashlee, being my best friend, knew me all too well.
“No,” I lied.
“Uh, huh, sure,” she replied. “Now get out of bed. I’m not letting you sleep until 2 today, like you’ve been doing the entire summer.”
I fake-gasped. “I do not sleep in until 2 everyday!”
She sighed. “Whatever, but I’m coming over in 20 minutes, and you better be ready to do something.”
“Fine,” I sighed, sticking my tongue out at my phone before snapping it shut.
I lay back down on my twin-sized bed and stared at my boring white ceiling. I didn't move until I heard my phone vibrate again. This should be interesting, I thought, walking over to my closet. I rummaged through a pile of clean clothes I hadn’t bothered folding. I slipped on a pair of jean shorts that were maybe a little too short for my 5’9” slim figure, and an old t-shirt from mine and Ashlee’s high school cross-country team. I ran my fingers through the lower-back length, bleach-blonde hair hanging from my head and pulled it into a high ponytail. It has been said that I could be Blake Lively’s clone, but I’ve never seen any resemblance.
As I was dabbing on a quick bit of mascara, a picture frame, face-down in my open sock drawer caught my eye. Curious, I pulled it out and drew in a sharp breath. It was a picture of Kevin Jonas and I from the summer before. I looked so happy, as did he. We had our arms wrapped around each other. I thought back to that day, the first time I laid eyes on him.
“You missed a spot,” a voice called from behind me as I picked up trash from the night before, at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater where I worked.
“Excuse me?” I asked, turning around and seeing a gorgeous guy with straightened brown hair standing there.
He smiled and extended his right hand. “I’m Kevin.”
Confused, I stuck out mine and shook his. “Sydney.”
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Sydney,” he said, the smile on his face even bigger now that he knew my name.
“Yeah, you, too,” I replied, turning back around to pick up more trash.
“So, you work here, I’m assuming?”
I sighed. Can’t this guy just leave me alone?
I turned around, only to find his face a few inches from mine. Startled, I nearly fell over, but his firm grasp caught me, pulling me closer to him.
I smiled. “Thanks.”
He returned a smile, crooked this time. “Anytime.”
I shook those thoughts out of my head and set it on my dresser. There was no need to relive the past, I told myself as I grabbed my purse and ran downstairs. No need at all.
again, kind of short, but the next chapter is MUCH longer. and this is just the beginning. =]
