Chapter Two;
“A new assignment father?” I ask, somewhat curiously. I don’t know if I want this assignment though, I like my little place in the bottom of the ship.
“Yes. I find that you have exceeded in your duties as prison guard.” He says, walking me to the starboard part of the ship. I smile, because it takes a lot to please him, so when he pays a compliment, you take it for what it’s worth, and don’t argue it.
“Thank you Father.” I say. He stops and rests his hands on the railing. “What is my assignment?”
“I need you to keep watch over the latest addition to our ship. She has been captured from a rival ship during a raid. We are hoping, that with her capture, we can have a decent ransom.”
“She?”
“Yes. Elizabeth Anne Cole. The daughter of one Joseph H. Cole, captain of the ship Constance, from a trading company in England. They ship spices from India into England, and they are very wealthy. Wealthy beyond imagination.”
“Really.” I state, “When will she be arriving here?”
“Very, very soon.” He says looking to the left, towards the stern of the boat. There is a commotion going on right now, some of the men are whistling, while others are shouting orders. I furrow my brow, then I look down at my black vest and white shirt with my many necklaces. I don’t exactly like it, but at least my clothes are washed and I am clean. “In fact, I think that that is her now.”
“Really? This soon?”
“Yes.”
We walk towards the commotion, and all I can hear is a girl yelling at the men around her. She has a good set of lungs, and I can tell that she doesn’t like being pushed around.
“Don’t touch me!” she yells when I reach her. Two of our fattest, smelliest, men had their hands on her upper arms. “Let go of me!”
“Can’t do that poppet.” Jonathan says in his slurred voice. “The Captain says we need to keep out eye on you.”
“So you won’t be goin’ nowhere.” The other man, Charlie, says.
“That won’t be necessary gentlemen. Joseph will take care of this now.” My father says, dismissing the two men.
They sigh, and I suppress a grin, before I look over my father’s shoulder at the girl that I’m keeping watch over.
The first thing I see are striking green eyes.
