SEVENTEEN;
and our daddies used to joke about the two of us,
never believeed we'd really fall in love.
and our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes
and said oh my my my.
took me back ...
3 DAYS LATER
We were all gathered in the Jonas' living room. We were watching the Dallas Cowboys play the Greenbay Packers, and the Jonas family was really into it. With 14 seconds left in the game Patrick Crayton ran into the end zone to catch the football, putting Dallas in the lead. Mr. Jonas, Kevin, Nick, Frankie, and even Mrs. Jonas jumped out of their seats to cheer. Popcorn went flying across the room, and there was much hugging and cheering and even a couple tears from Nicholas. Joe took this moment as a diversion, taking my hand and pulling me away, and out onto the front porch.
We were on the front porch swing for a little while just talking. I don't think anyone had even realized we left the room.
"So, Kirs..." Joe said. I watched him waiting for him to continue. "I only remember a little bit of what happened the past few days..." He said.
"I'm so sorry Joe." I said.
"No, that's not really what I'm talking about." He said. "I mean, in the hospital..."
"Yeah?" I said, I didn't know where exactly he was going with this.
"Remember when Kevin was telling me... about me, and you?" He asked.
"You remember that?" I said, blushing.
"Yeah. And I just wanted to tell you, that it was all true. Down to the very last detail." He said. I grinned at him and he smiled back at me and continued. "I've been in love with you since I was six. The years we were apart were the hardest years of my life. I've been happier the past few months that we've been together than I have been since the day I left New Jersey when we were fifteen."
"Aw, Joe.." I said smiling. "I feel the same way."
"Then will you be my girlfriend, Kirs?"
"Yes." I said. Maybe I sounded too eager, but I didn't care. Joe grinned with delight. A huge weight had just been lifted off of me. I don't think I'd ever been happier in my whole life.
"I have something for you." Joe said.
"Okay." I said excitedly.
"I'm gunna go get it." Joe said, standing up and running around to the back yard. I waited patiently on the front porch swing until I saw Joe coming back. But this time he wasn't alone. Now he was walking a puppy on a leash, and the puppy was barking happily and nipping at Joe's heels.
"Oh my goodness! Joe! What is this for?!?" I asked, scooping the puppy up in my arms and cradling it against my chest.
"Remember?" Joe asked. I looked at him questioningly. "Because I killed your worm." He grinned and winked.
I leaned down patting my new puppy on the head. "Oh, Joe. You didn't have to!" I said.
"I don't break my promises." He said. "I promised I wouldn't forget you when I left. And I swear, there wasn't a day when I was gone that you didn't cross my mind. And I promised I would come back. And look where I am now."
And then he pulled me towards him and he pressed his lips to mine and I kissed him again for the first time in more than 7 years, and right there, in his arms, with my new puppy snapping at my heels, I never wanted that moment to end.
