03.
That night, I slept in Kevin’s bunk. He continuously ran his hands through my blond hair and his arms were wrapped around me the entire night, never letting me go. The boys’ security manager, Big Rob, affixed a new security system to their bus and made some changes to his monitoring system. When I woke up the next morning, Kevin and I made our way into the kitchen for breakfast. We were surprised to see Mr. and Mrs. Jonas at the kitchen table, since they usually ate in a different bus before coming to wake us up. I looked at the table they were seated at and spotted the reason for their early visit: a manila envelope was sitting between them on the table. I took a seat next to Mrs. Jonas, waiting to hear the results of my tests.
Kevin sat down next to me, but was told by Mr. Jonas to join the other boys in the back lounge. I knew our conversation would be serious if Mr. Jonas wanted privacy. Reluctantly, Kevin got up and gave my hand a squeeze before leaving. “So, what were the results?” I asked, hoping it was nothing bad.
“Well,” Mr. Jonas started, “you don’t have any STDs.”
“That’s awesome!” I was so relieved not to have to go through any treatments. My happiness, however, was quickly shattered when Mrs. Jonas spoke up.
“But, Erin, there is something else. It’s still very early to tell…” her voice started to trail off. “Honey, the test results say that you’re pregnant. It’s still too early to know for sure, but this test is usually right.”
“WHAT?” I nearly screamed. “I can’t be pregnant! I’m only 19 years old!” I looked down at the purity ring I had worn since I was 13. The ring no longer seemed to shine; now, it looked just like a cheap piece of scrap metal wound around my finger.
“We know this is hard to understand,” Mr. Jonas began, “it is hard for us to understand too. But, like Denise said, it is still too early to tell. I suggest you don’t tell Kevin or the boys yet until we’re 100% sure.”
I agreed completely with him. There was no way I was going to ruin my relationship with Kevin over only a possibility. I took a few deep breaths and went to the back lounge to deliver the good news to the guys. “I’m clean! No STDs on me!” I shouted. The boys jumped up and enveloped me in a hug.
Kevin pulled away and asked about what I was dreading. “Are you pregnant?” he asked shyly.
I took a deep breath and gave him an honest answer, “It is still too early to tell. A few more days and I’ll know for sure.”
He nodded and we continued with our day. Kevin never left my side, even when I was going to the bathroom. He’d walk with me to the bathroom and stand outside the door until I was done- and this was in all while we were in the tour bus. I slept in his bunk again that night, both of us feeling safer that way.
I woke up early that morning feeling very sick. I ran to the bathroom and threw-up. I threw up a few times that day, in fact, but never told anyone. I encountered the same thing the next day. Morning sickness my brain called. You’re 100% pregnant, Erin. My own brain was taunting me to find out. When we reached the destination of the next venue, I asked Mrs. Jonas to take me to the drug store so I could find out. She bought me the tests and I ran to the bus’ bathroom. It’s going to be a plus. You know you’re pregnant. I waited the longest 5 minutes of my life. I looked at the three tests I took, all with the same answer to my question.
