Chapter 1
After a day and a half travel time, we had arrived at our first destination, Detroit. The guys filed off the bus, grabbing their respective gear. Tim, the lead guitarist, grabbed his guitar and followed Heath and Jason as they attempted to off-load Adam’s drum-set. I slowly made my way down the steps of the bus and looked around, noticing a huge entourage of buses surrounding the venue. I headed inside behind the band and looked around for the room that the conference was to take place in. After walking down numerous corridors, we came across a room where Mr. Jonas was seated in a chair at the head of a large table. I walked in and firmly shook his hand.
“Hi, I’m Marina. Marni for short. And this is Of Broken” gesturing to the group of guys standing behind me.
“Hello Marni, I’m Kevin Jonas, the boys manager. They should be here any minute. Please, sit down.”
It wasn’t long before they walked in, late as rockstars usually are. They took seats opposite from ours, on the other side of the table. Mr. Jonas spoke sternly.
“Boys, care to explain why you took so long and kept your opening act waiting?”
Kevin spoke on behalf of his brothers, “I’m sorry Dad, and to you all as well. Joseph here couldn’t get his hair to lie flat the way he wanted it to. Therefore, he made us late.”
Joe looked embarrassed, “Dude, you didn’t have to tell everyone that.”
Mr. Jonas didn’t look pleased, “Don’t let it happen again. Carrying on, I would like you to meet your opening act, Of Broken. If my memory is correct, this is Marni.” I nodded in agreement as introductions were made and handshakes were exchanged.
We went over our setlist with Mr. Jonas, who agreed to approve it after soundcheck. The meeting quickly ended as he left to go attend to some issues with the stage that had arisen. Kevin and Tim were talking about their guitars, Adam was zoning off into space, Heath was comparing shoes with Nick, leaving Joe and I just staring at each other. I could feel his eyes scanning over every inch of my body, not that I didn’t mind. He had always been my favorite brother; but that was a secret I was not willing to part with. He opened in his mouth in a desperate attempt to break the silence between us.
“So you’re joining your brother on tour, I take it?”
I laughed, “No, I’m not related to any of these guys. We’re just really good friends. I’m their manager, I got them started and I write their songs and figure their arrangements.”
His eyes widened with surprise, “Wow, aren’t you a little young to manage a band?”
Shaking my head in disbelief, I responded, “Just because I am a girl and I am only 18, doesn’t mean that I can’t manage them. I can and I have for over a year now. 68 shows and an album later, here we are. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some business to attend to back at the bus. See you at soundcheck.” I quickly stood and walked briskly out of the room, dialing a number on my iPhone and pressing it up to my ear, leaving Joe in a stunned silence.
No one questioned my authority over the band. Especially not the hottest rockstar to ever exist. Not if I had anything to do with it. I was determined to show him I had what it took, even if it meant stopping at no expense.
