ONE;
It's like catching lightning, the chances of finding someone like you.
It's one in a million, the chances of feeling the way we do.
I crawled out from underneath the deck screaming all the way. I ran round the edge of the house and hid behind a small shrub. I sat downing gasping for air. I hesitantly stood up and peeked around the corner. "I SEE YOU!" Kevin yelled running over to me. I immediatly turned and ran around the other end of the house only to see that I was trapped.
I looked at Joe quizzicaly and he stared back at me. I prepared myself to run. I waited for the right moment and sprinted away. Just seconds later I felt Joe's arms around me, in a bear hug. "GOTCHA!" Joe yelled. I laughed at we both fell to the ground and he tickled me as I tried unsucessfully to push him away.
"You're it" Nick said calmly as he emerged from behind a big pine tree. But just then Mrs. Jonas opened the front door and yelled for us to come in for lunch.
Me and Joe both sat up together. Joe jumped up and held out his hand to help me. I giggled and flushed red but I grabbed his hand and let him pull me up. "C'mon Kirs" He said leading me up to the house. He was the only person who ever called me that. Everyone else called me Kirsten. I smiled at the pleasant thought and walked inside as he held the door open for me. I took my place at the table and waited patiently for Mrs. Jonas to set my meal in front of me. I grinned at the peanut butter and jelly sandwich she had prepared.
"Thank you Mrs. J." I said politely.
"You're very welcome, Kirsten." She said as she gave the boys their meals. Me and Joe ate quickly and chugged down our milk glaring at eachother the whole time. In my head we were racing to see who could finish first but I knew that wasn't the reason. Joe glanced over at Nick and Kevin's half finished sandwiches and their undrank milk and a smile formed on his face.
"I'm done." He said jumping up.
"Me too. It was good." I took my plate to the sink and rinsed it off.
"Kirs let's go outside." He said nudging me. I led the way back outside and raced him to the treehouse. I climbed up the ladder as fast as my feet would allow and then looked through the small space to watch Joe climb up. He pulled himself up and positions himself next to me on the floor. Then he pulled up the ladder just high enough the Kevin and Nick wouldn't be able to come up. I then scooted to the back wall and layed my head back, closing my eyes.
It was only when I felt Joe's hand on mine that I reopened them. "I got this for you." He said matter-of-factly as he opened my closed fist and placed something in my hand before closing it again. I looked at him confused and then opened my fist. A ring was there. It had a goldish tint, probably just something you could get for a quarter at a grocery store, but it was the thought that counted, and etched into the edge it said I <3 YOU.
"Joe, I love it." I said smiling at him. I really did love it.
"I have one just like it, see?" Joe said holding up his hand to show me his own. I slipped mine on and held it up so it shined in the light.
"It's pretty" I said without taking my eyes away from the ring.
"I hoped you would like it." He said looking away from my ring and right at me.
"I do."
