The Sun Sets On My Tears
The sky was painted with reds, oranges, purples, and blues as the sun began to set out over the ocean. If you looked closely, you could see the silhouette of a girl sitting on a boulder overlooking the view in the distance. What you couldn’t see however were the tears that were streaming down her face.
Her five foot, five inch figure was hunched over as her arms were holding her legs and her chin was rested on top of her knees. Her light brown, blonde highlighted hair was blowing in the light breeze and her sea green eyes were leaking tears. She was staring out at the ocean and just listened to the waves crash below, lost in her thoughts. She was so absorbed by her thoughts, that she didn’t even notice a handsome boy sit down next to her until he said something.
“Are you okay?” she heard a sweet, yet concerned voice ask. Her gaze went from the view that was in front of her to being placed on the owner of the voice. Initially her vision was too obstructed by the tears but after she blinked them away a little, she was able to see him. The mess of short but very cute curls atop of his head and the warm, chocolate, brown eyes that looked at her. The look of concern in his eyes that was directed towards someone he didn’t even know. He almost looked familiar but she knew that she had never met this boy before and would most certainly have remembered him if she had.
She understood that he was expecting an answer but when she tried to open her mouth to say that she was fine, a sob escaped. She wasn’t fine, not today anyway. Today was the anniversary of her aunt’s death and she missed her so much.
As another sob escaped her mouth, she felt two strong arms wrap around her. It took all of five minutes to finally realize that it was the boy next to her that was holding her. She didn’t even know his name and he didn’t know hers, and yet she felt safe in his arms, almost like that was where she was supposed to be.
Almost twenty minutes later, her sobs were finally subsiding. For some reason, this boy was able to comfort her so much better than her friends or family ever could. When she picked her head up off of his chest, she looked at him to see the concern still in his eyes. “I’m sorry about that,” she whispered to him softly as her eyes went back to looking out at the ocean. By now the sun had almost completely disappeared into the water.
“It’s okay,” he replied back with his voice just above a whisper. They sat there for a few minutes, just looking out at the beautiful scene in front of them before he spoke again. “I’m Nick by the way.”
“I’m Kati,” was her simple response. She knew that he was going to ask why she was crying and she really wasn’t looking forward to having this guy pity her. But when the question she was expecting didn’t come within the next ten minutes, she turned her head and her confused gaze ended up on him. “Aren’t you going to ask me what’s wrong?” she asked with a hint of surprise in her voice.
“No. I figure if you want to tell me, you will,” he answered with just a trace of an amused look on his beautiful face.
“Oh.” After a few moments of sitting in silence, she spoke up once again. “It’s the anniversary of my aunt Terri’s death. It’s been a few years since she passed, but it always hits me hard on today,” she told him as tears began to well up in her eyes yet again.
“I’m sorry, but if it makes you feel any better, you’ll see her again in eternity,” he told her in one of the most caring tones she had ever heard. She knew that he was speaking the truth though. Her aunt and her would be reunited once again in eternity.
‘Wait a second here. Eternity…oh my…that’s why he looks so familiar. I’m sitting next to Nick Jonas. Nick Jonas has been sitting here comforting me when he didn’t even know who I was. I can’t believe that I didn’t even realize it was him.’ The thoughts had started racing through her mind. She couldn’t believe that it had taken this long to figure out just who the boy sitting next to her was. Especially since she claimed to have OJD.
“Penny for your thoughts?” was what finally made her crash back down to planet Earth. She had completely spaced out and hadn’t even noticed it.
“Oh nothing. I was just thinking about how right you were,” was her response. The two of them stayed out there for another two hours just talking before Kati’s mom finally called her back into the house. “Sorry I’ve got to go. Thanks for staying and talking to me,” she stated as she stood up and dusted off her pants.
He stood up as well. “You don’t have to thank me. I was just helping someone who needed it.”
“Yeah but still. Thank you.” She started to walk away but didn’t get much farther than a few steps before she heard his voice again.
“Wait. Do you think that maybe I could get your number? You know, in case I need someone to talk to?” he asked her.
“Um…sure of course,” she said as she programmed her phone number into his cell phone. “I suppose it’s only fair that I return the favor of listening, huh?” was the final thing that she said to him before she walked inside her house.
That night was the beginning of a beautiful friendship that turned into one of the most incredible relationships that either one of them had ever had. All thanks to Kati’s Aunt Terri.
