Okay, so it took me longer than expected to write this. Blame Will, okay?
But here it is!
This one is to Melissa, because I give her a part in every story, and this one is going to be a lot of fun to write.
And hello, relatively long chapter!
Chapter One
Joseph Jonas walked into his brightly lit office building with a smile. He gave his receptionist, Melissa, a friendly wave before walking into his private office. He knew that Melissa would let him get situated before coming in and reminding him of his priorities for the day. Putting his hat and jacket on a stand, he sat in his chair and debated whether or not he really wanted to be here today.
In a different world, Joseph Adam Jonas may have been a rock star, with his gorgeous dark brown hair and even more luscious brown eyes that many people found themselves lost in. But this was reality, and Joseph Jonas wasn’t a rock star. He was an attorney, and a rather good one at that.
His friends and family joked when he first decided on his chosen career path, but once they realized how serious he was (and he was hardly serious when he didn’t have to be) they supported him whole-heartedly. And they were quite surprised when he turned out to be amazing at his profession.
Interrupting his thoughts, Melissa walked in with stacks of papers and he sighed. Melissa, knowing how much he hated paperwork, hid a smile and placed the pile of papers on his desk. “I know you hate it,” she said before turning and leaving, “but this is all you have to do today. No appointments or anything.” He nodded and this time Melissa couldn’t hide the smile that threatened to form on her face. “But your brother may show up.”
He didn’t have to ask which one, because of the smile on her face. Melissa was a few years younger than himself, and had quite the crush on his younger brother Nicholas. He didn’t tell Melissa, but he was sure his younger brother felt the same for his upbeat receptionist.
He watched as Melissa left his office and closed his door, before sighing again and starting the mess of paperwork on his desk.
--
A few hours passed, and he found himself almost done with his work when he heard muffled giggling coming from the reception area. He knew immediately that Nicholas was there, and smiled. He wanted more than anything to interfere with the progress the two were making, but knew Nicholas liked to take his time with relationships.
Standing up, he decided to greet his brother in the lobby without having to be announced. When he opened the door he found himself chuckling at the sight before him. Melissa was laughing loudly at a joke his brother was telling her, and Nicholas was quite comfortably sitting (or sprawling, Joseph couldn’t decide) on Melissa’s desk.
Startled by the chuckle, Melissa jumped and Nicholas did too, causing him to fall off of the desk. This made everyone laugh as a blushing Nicholas jumped up immediately trying to save face, his wild mane of curls bouncing.
“Nicholas,” Joseph said, shaking his brother’s hand. “What’s going on?”
Unlike Joseph’s career choice, Nicholas was a musician. Though he wasn’t famous, he’d written many songs for artists and was known as a great lyricist and musician. A lot of the hits on the radio he’d had some part in. It was the perfect job for him, because his passion and vitality for life got to shine through every word or melody he wrote.
“Not much, I was just in town and wondered if you’d like to catch up over lunch?” Though they were close, they didn’t see each other regularly.
“I’d like that. I’m almost done with my paperwork and could use a distraction. Let me get my coat.” He walked back into his office to grab his coat and hat and met with his brother and Melissa in the lobby.
“Melissa,” Joseph started, causing her to look up from her computer. “Why don’t we close up for an hour or two and you join us?”
Melissa looked shocked but happy with this choice, and grabbed her coat quickly and eagerly. He smiled when he saw the pleased expression on his brother’s face as well. He didn’t consider asking his receptionist for lunch with himself and his brother meddling in their affairs.
Besides, he was sure the song they listened to on the radio as they made their way to the restaurant was written about her. Nicholas never could hide his feelings that well.
